      2. Intelligent Network/Advanced Intelligent Network

As the PSTN evolved from analog system to digital system, new technologies were introduced including Stored Program Control (SPC), Operating Management System (OSS), centralized databases, and feature node service interfaces.   During the mid-1980s, Bell Operating Regional Companies (RBOCs) in the US began requesting intelligent features.  Telcordia Technologies (Bellcore) responded to this request and developed the concept of Intelligent Network 1(IN/1).  The initial use of IN technology was for number translation services such as translating toll free numbers to regular PSTN numbers.  It evolved into Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN) in North America which includes much more complex services such as Custom Local Area Signaling Services (CLASS) and prepaid telephone calls.   The International Telecommunications Union  (ITU) endorsing the concepts of AIN, developed Recommendations named Q.1200 series (also known as Capability Sets) as listed in Table 2-1.

ITU Recommendations:

The ITU defined a number of Recommendations in Q series and I series associated with IN/AIN. Some of key Recommendations are:

Q.1200: General series Intelligent Network Recommendation structure.   A block of one hundred numbers has been set aside starting from Q.1200 in the Q series for the development of Intelligent Network (IN) Recommendations.  IN is applicable to a wide variety of networks, including public-switched telephone network (PSTN) mobile, packet switched public data network (PSPDN) and integrated services digital network (ISDN).  IN supports a wide variety of services, including supplementary services, and utilizes existing and future bearer services.  The following defines the IN architecture in various planes.

Q.1201: Principles of intelligent network architecture  (This Recommendation is published with the double number Q.1201 and I.312).

Q.1202: Intelligent network - Service plane architecture  (This Recommendation is published with the double number Q.1202 and I.328).

Q.1203: Intelligent network - Global functional plane architecture  (This Recommendation is published with the double number Q.1203 and I.329).

Q.1204: Intelligent network distributed functional plane architecture.

Q.1205: Intelligent network physical plane architecture.

Q.1211: Introduction to Intelligent Network Capability Set 1.

Q.1221: Introduction to Intelligent Network Capability Set 2.

Q.1231: Introduction to Intelligent Network Capability Set 3.

Q.1241: Introduction to Intelligent Network Capability Set 4.

Q.1208: General aspects of the Intelligent Network Application protocol.  This recommendation defines the general aspects of the interfaces and protocols.  The Q.12x8 series define the detailed protocols and interfaces supported in each capability set for that capability set.
